I've had two cats since they were little kittens. I named them Gumby and Pokie. On January 2nd, at the age of seventeen, Pokie passed away due to renal failure. For approximately one week prior to Pokie's passing my cat Gumby would howl, like she was crying, in the middle of the night. She's done this before, when I would put the food away in the evenings and wake up around six am to place it out again. If I was one minute past six she would howl. Although I didn't know the purpose behind the howl's I wasn't overly concerned about them either. In hindsight I now believe she sensed the impending death and began her grieving prior to Pokie's passing. Although I wasn't aware that Pokie was in her final days, she certainly didn't provide any outward indication until her final night, I did notice that the long-time friends were not overly affectionate with one another. Since Pokie's passing Gumby's cries at night have become much more persistent and urging. At times, she now cries during the day as well. I've tried to sit with her and visualize Pokie's transcendence into a loving heaven where she's happy and whole again but I just don't think the message is getting through to Gumby. Any suggestions on how to help my aging friend to mourn her loss and find comfort?

After our Baby passed away after 16 years, Mandi my siamese became very distant. She wouldnt eat or drink anything. She went from room to room moewl-ing. She would swat me if I tried petting or holding her. This went on for several weeks. I got blankets Baby always slept on and put some in each room of the house along with his favorite toys. I rub his favorite toys on Mandi when we play. Some one told me to put pictures of him on the floor and to talk about him with Mandi. I was desperate so I was willing to try anything. I put 8X10 pictures on the floor and would tell Mandi stories about Baby and remind her of things they loved to do together. Mandi has finally come around. I talk to Mandi everyday now about Baby. She gives me this meow that makes me believe she understands what I am saying. I hope this helps you even in the littlest way. Good Luck.
